Gruber did make some very good points but I think there’s an underlying problem that doesn’t get explicitly addressed: the cost of fast and the cost of rapid, unplanned change. Why the massive amounts of overtime? I get the feeling it’s because of poorly estimated demand, insufficient lead times and the 11th hour design changes that Jobs was famous for making (he seemed to think this was normal in his biography). Plus a possible disregard for the consequences of design decisions.
IMHO.
